What do you picture when you retire? Is it a tropical beach, with a lounge chair, umbrella and frosty drink spiked with your favorite indulgence? Is it a condo with a balcony overlooking the mountains? Or is it simply living in an area where you can be close to your family and friends and live everyday as it comes? Whatever you dream of for your retirement, it is a time that should be about relaxation, rejuvenation and appreciation. While some stress naturally comes with aging, you have enough to worry about with your health, finances, loss and uncertainty; so you might not need the place that you choose to settle down contributing to the stress that you are forced to cope with when you are a senior.
Each and every year, America's Most Stressful Cities are ranked based on crowding, poor air quality, high unemployment rate and declining home prices. These factors can contribute to your ability to just enjoy and make the most of your retirement, so before you're deciding where to relocate to for your senior years, investigate those factors in each of the destinations you're considering.
Chicago has been ranked the worst place to live for the second year in a row because unemployment rates are high; through this might not effect your directly in your retirement, if can play a role in the type of place it is to live in terms of crime, and overall quality of life of the residents. It's also overcrowded, has poor air quality, a terrible housing market, and the weather isn't the best; so if you move to Chicago in your retirement, you may find your stress increase. Other places to avoid on the list of America's Most Stressful Cities are Los Angeles, New York, Cleveland and Providence. If you already live in one of these cities, weigh the benefits of living there that you know you'll already receive, like proximity to family and friends, existence of support network that includes health care professionals to see if the additional stresses are worthwhile. If you don't think so, it might just be time to start packing your bags!!
