Gardening the Path to Health and Happiness
Gardening has its benefits to each of us differently, whether it's a hobby that we as caregivers enjoy in the few moments each day we try to sneak to ourselves, or a hobby that we encourage the loved ones that we care for to try in order to bring them health and happiness.
For many seniors, gardeningcan be a chance to escape. That doesn't mean that they need to get away from the people they care about, it just means that it's an activity that can help them to shift their focus away from the things that have them worried; like their health, their finances, and the memories that they're struggling to hang onto as they get older. Gardening can also be empowering, because planting flowers, trees, and plants is something that they have control over; a rare commodity in the life of a senior who is faced with the unknown day after day, hour after hour. For seniors, gardening can also be a creative outlet; it's a form of design that can inspire them to use their imaginations and shape what they'd like their garden to look like. Plus, with gardening, there can be a major feeling of accomplishment, when after all the hard work, flowers bloom in the spring or fruits and vegetables are ready to be harvested for serving at the dinner table for the whole family to enjoy.
As caregivers, we need to sneak little moments to ourselves as well, and that's not always possible when we're so focused on caring for others. That's another reason why gardening can be so great; it's a shared activity, whether you're working collectively with your elderly loved one or simply taking some space of your own to plant in the garden, you are working towards a mutual goal that extends beyond the garden. Gardening puts seniors and their caregivers alike on the path to health and happiness, you'll enjoy what you've created together, and even more than that, you'll appreciate each other more for the time that you spent finding rejuvenation in the garden.
Start planting for today, and gardening for the future, and together you'll be on the path to health and happiness.
