For aging seniors who have trouble sleeping

Dealing with Chronic Pain

If an aging senior has trouble sleeping, it is not uncommon. While there can be a variety of factors that contribute to this issue - overall health and well-being of an older adult is one of the major reasons is chronic pain.

More than 50% of older adults need care and suffer from chronic pain and this can mean that a good night's sleep is a rarity. Here are some tips for coping with chronic pain and ensuring that it does not affect your ability to be well-rested during your aging years.

1. Get quality sleep - while older adults feel like they are getting a good night's rest when spending 6 or more hours in bed each night, if that is not quality sleep due to symptoms of chronic pain, alternative measures must be considered.

2. Think about getting a new mattress - if the chronic pain you are experiencing is in your back or neck, your mattress could be in part to blame. It was once thought that firm mattresses are good for the back but they can be too firm. Choose one that is comfortable for your body

3. Consider your lifestyle habits - diet and exercise can help reduce chronic pain. Focus on activities that involve stretching and relaxation

4. Investigate the prescription medications for chronic pain - there is a possibility that they can cause insomnia and alter sleeping patterns. If you are having trouble sleeping, talk to your doctor about switching your medications
